Board of Elders Quarterly Report – July 2018
What is the main purpose of the Board of Elders, and who are they?
Along with Pastor John, the Elders are primarily concerned with the spiritual health of the congregation and school -- promoting spiritual growth and, ultimately, equipping the church members to actively spread the Gospel (as Jesus directed in Matthew 28). The Elders are elected by the congregation, and each assists an assigned group of members with their spiritual development and concerns. The Elders currently serving are Yasuko DeBoard, Klaus Dunst, Allan Hess, Doug Kamin, Chuck McMahan, Hal Printup, and Laura Rusch.
In 2008, the congregation began working to develop plans for FLV to become a family of Christians equipped to confidently and joyfully spread the Gospel. To become a disciple-making church will require cultivating leaders as well as empowering the congregation itself to fully develop their God-given gifts. Pastor John is well equipped to continue developing this vision. Under his leadership, the Elders meet monthly.
What Progress has been made?
Pastor John and the Elders have been working to develop tools and effective strategies to achieve the vision of becoming more missional and being a valuable resource to our community as part of this process:
- Central to the vision is the introduction of the Rooted Group ministry. About 30 congregants took part in four Rooted Groups early this year. In the Fall, additional Rooted Groups will be offered.
- Built relationships of confidence and trust with school staff, church staff and boards.
- First Lutheran supported members who took part in a mission trip to Vietnam, and plans are to send members to Jordan in the Fall. Such mission trips emphasize the church’s global missional focus.
