REACH Honors Hispanic and Native American Heritage Months (Oct. & Nov.)

The Great Wall of Los Angeles is one of the largest murals in the world and is located in San Fernando Valley. It depicts eras of California's history from prehistoric times through the 1960's. The scenes emphasize the role played by Native Americans, Latinos (focusing on those with Mexican heritage, sometimes identified as Chicano/a), African Americans, Asian Americans, and Jewish Americans in creating California's culture. The Great Wall imagery highlights themes such as immigration, exploration of people and land, women's rights, class distinctions, racism, and racial equality.

Conceived by Judy Baca and worked on over the course of five summers between 1976 and 1983, Baca collaborated with 400 youth, artists and community members to form the Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC), located two blocks west of our Church.

Now, Baca is updating the mural to present-day, working with other artists in Sparc's gallery space located at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica. We encourage you to attend this exciting "history in the making" venture and also to stop by our neighbor, Sparc, both open to the public and free of charge.
